Keeping my kids in reading material

We’re a big book loving family around here.  As early as I can remember as a kid, evenings included sitting on my dad’s lap reading the Bible together (it was his early reader primer of choice).  I could read by the time I was 2 or 3, and from that point on I’m always reading SOMETHING.  I remember reading the cereal box at breakfast just because there was nothing else in the house I hadn’t read yet.  Well, now I find myself on the parental end of that little problem-KEEPING enough material in the house without spending a fortune.

With 3 young readers in the house (and 2 who love books but can’t read them yet!), we frequently hit yard sales and buy boxes of books at a time.  This solves the “fresh material” issue for the summers at least, but it does bring about the issue of space.   We recycle them out in our yard sales, but the time in between we don’t know where to store them.  So this year, we’ve been focusing more on using our local library.

Every week, we head over and I release the older kids to the juvenile section while I head off to whatever section strikes my fancy for the day.  Our library is relatively small in the grand scheme, but it’s part of a statewide network of lending (I’m sure most of you are familiar with the inter-library loan system).  I’m sure we’ll be using that quite a bit!

Today I think we each checked out our body weight in books, the librarian didn’t believe me when I said that was only a weeks worth!  As for me, I picked up the Martha Stewart Encyclopedia of Crafts to poke through, I’m excited to see what all is inside.  I already have her Homemaking book, and I love it-the detail on how to keep a home is really fantastic.

Are you a reader?  Got any fabulous books to recommend to me?  I’m always looking for new things to read!!!

It’s Tax Day & almost the end of UBP10!

April 15th, strikes dread in the hearts of many Americans..tax day.  I did our federal taxes a few months ago, then totally forgot to do our state taxes until last night.  Oops!  But they’re done now!

There’s only one more day left for the Ultimate Blog Party 2010 too!  I have so loved seeing everyone’s suggestions for the “Name My New Product” contest!  Keep them coming, I’m going to have SUCH a hard time deciding because there are some really awesome ideas there!

I finally finished The Handmade Marketplace, and posted my review of it over on Stuff to Love.  We’re giving a copy away, so you should definitely go and enter it!  Starting next week, I’ll be doing a weekly discussion series on the book, to go more in depth on my thoughts from it, and to hopefully have some awesome talks with all of you so we can learn from another!  I really can’t wait, it’s such a fabulous book, and I’m so excited to share more with ya’ll, so I hope you’ll be back next week for that.

Now, it’s time to go and run errands while the older kiddos are at school, so I hope everyone has a fabulous day!

Getting dragged into a good book

I’ve gotten dragged into this book tonight-The Handmade Marketplace: How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally and Online by Kari Chapin.  When I first saw this book available, I had to get my hands on it.  I’m about a quarter of the way through so far, and I’m making tons of notes!

I’ll be doing a regular review over on Stuff to Love once I’m finished, but I’m planning to do a more in-depth and personal series over here.  I know quite a few of my readers are in the “handmade business” as well, and I have visions of some awesome discussions with this book as the jumping off point!

I’m a book lover from way back, and I’m really trying to get back to it-MAKING myself take even 15 minutes a day to read a bit.  I’m a fast reader so I plow through books like crazy (Twilight series?  Took me about 12 hours total to read all the books)..I need recommendations!!!  What are your faves (already out or coming soon)?  I love craft books, not a huge fan of traditional romance books but those in the “chick flick” vein are fine, mysteries, touch of sci fi…I’m a very eclectic girl so tell me what are YOU reading?
